The story of Helping Hands for Youth began decades ago under a different name: Greater Columbus Community Helping Hands. In those early days, the organization was the vision of Dorothy Cage, a woman who understood firsthand what it meant to need a little extra support—and what a difference it can make when someone steps up and offers it.
Dorothy saw something that others often missed: the quiet struggles of students who didn’t always stand out for the right reasons. She thought about the kids whose grades weren’t perfect, who sometimes missed school, or who acted out not because they didn’t care, but because life had thrown them more obstacles than most. She knew that for students from low to moderate income households, the smallest setback—a broken laptop, a lack of personal care items, the absence of a mentor—could snowball into yet another barrier between them and their potential.
So she built an organization that wouldn’t let those students fall through the cracks. Greater Columbus Community Helping Hands became a place where young people could find the resources they needed to keep moving forward. Dorothy made sure technology and basic essentials were available, not as handouts, but as stepping stones—ways to level the playing field so every student had a real shot at college, at opportunity, at hope.
By 2024, the organization’s impact had grown far beyond its original neighborhood. It was clear the mission was bigger, too. The decision to rename it Helping Hands for Youth wasn’t just about changing a sign on the door. It was about repositioning the organization to more broadly serve the community, to meet the evolving needs of young people across the city, and to signal that every student—no matter their story—deserves someone in their corner.
Providing a helping hand was always at the heart of Dorothy’s vision, because she never forgot the people who invested in her, the mentors and neighbors who offered guidance, encouragement, and sometimes just a listening ear. Her legacy lives on in every student who finds support, every graduate who walks across the stage, and every life that’s changed by a simple act of generosity.
Helping Hands for Youth stands as a testament to what’s possible when a community chooses to lift up its young people—not just the top of the class or the star athletes, but every kid who needs a hand to hold. And it’s a promise that no one, no matter their circumstances, will be left behind.
Journey to Your Future
Introduced in 2024, Journey to Your Future was created as a bridge between the organization’s two flagship initiatives—Stepping Off to College and Mapping Your Future. As each program grew in size and scope, it became clear that many students were navigating a space in between: not yet certain whether college, career, or a combination of both was the right next step. Journey to Your Future was designed specifically to serve those students.
Beyond bridging the two existing initiatives, Journey to Your Future has also served as a catalyst for expanding the organization’s broader programming. It marked a new era for Helping Hands for Youth—one in which the organization’s initiatives work together as a cohesive, interconnected system rather than standalone programs. Together, Stepping Off to College, Mapping Your Future, and Journey to Your Future represent the full arc of the organization’s mission: to meet every young person where they are, support them through every step, and help them arrive—successfully—wherever their journey is meant to take them.
Our Initiatives
Since its founding, Helping Hands for Youth has grown its impact through purposeful, student-centered initiatives designed to meet young people wherever they are on their journey. From college readiness to career exploration, each program reflects the organization’s unwavering commitment to opening doors for students who need it most. What began as a single initiative has evolved into a connected ecosystem of programs—each one building on the last, each one expanding the reach and depth of the organization’s mission.
Stepping Off to College
Stepping Off to College was the first initiative ever launched by Helping Hands for Youth, and it remains the cornerstone of the organization’s work. Born directly from Dorothy Cage’s founding vision, the program was created to address one of the most significant barriers facing low-to-moderate income students: the overwhelming complexity of the college preparation and application process.
More than a college prep program, Stepping Off to College is a statement of belief—a belief that every student, regardless of their zip code or GPA, deserves a clear and supported path to post-secondary success. It set the standard for every initiative that followed.
Mapping Your Future
Launched in 2020, Mapping Your Future expanded the organization’s reach beyond college preparation to embrace the full spectrum of post-secondary possibilities. Recognizing that not every student’s path leads directly to a four-year university—and that every path deserves equal support and respect—this initiative was designed to help students explore careers, critical thinking, workforce readiness, and life skills that lay the groundwork for long-term success.
Where Stepping Off to College opened the door to higher education, Mapping Your Future widened it—ensuring that the organization could walk alongside students no matter what direction their ambitions led them.
